How to Create a Shopify Store: The Complete Guide
Every step to create a Shopify store that sells: planning, plan choice, theme, product pages, payments, SEO, emails. With a realistic budget and timeline.
The Shopify App Store counts thousands of apps, and that’s as much a trap as a treasure: every added app costs money, loading speed and complexity. Here are the ones I actually install on my clients’ stores, and the rule to decide whether an app deserves its place.
An app must either win sales or save time, measurably. Before every install, check three things:
A well-built small-business store runs perfectly well on 5 to 8 apps. Beyond 15, there’s almost always a clean-up to do.
Start with the official free apps, reliable, fast, well integrated:
The most effective trust signal in existence is your customers’ reviews. Judge.me offers the best feature-to-price ratio on the market: automatic collection after purchase, stars in Google results, customer photos. Its free plan already covers the essentials of a small store.
What matters isn’t the tool but the tuning: the review request email must go out at the right moment (after the product arrives, not after the order).
As long as you have a few hundred contacts, Shopify Email is enough. Beyond that, Klaviyo becomes the reference: fine segmentation (recent buyers, inactives, big baskets), sophisticated flows (multi-step abandoned cart, win-back, loyalty) and precise tracking of the revenue email generates.
It’s the most expensive app on this list (priced by list size), but properly configured, email commonly drives 15 to 25% of an established store’s revenue. The return on investment is rarely in question.
Below a dozen requests a day, a well-kept inbox and an FAQ page do the job. Beyond that, Gorgias centralises email, chat, Instagram and Facebook in one tool, with the customer’s order history displayed next to each conversation. Valuable, but don’t anticipate: install it when the need is real.
A compliant cookie banner isn’t optional in Europe. Pandectes GDPR Compliance manages consent properly and integrates with Google’s consent mode. An app of this kind is a regulatory must-have : pick one, configure it well, stop thinking about it.
Three families of apps to avoid, against the grain of the usual lists:
A minimal stack that covers 90% of a small business’s needs: Shopify’s free apps + Judge.me + a GDPR solution, then Klaviyo once the email list takes off. Every euro of app subscription must justify itself in your numbers.
