How to Create a Shopify Store: The Complete Guide

Creating a Shopify store takes a few hours. Creating a Shopify store that sells takes a few weeks, and that’s the whole difference between a website that exists and a website that earns. This guide walks through the method I apply on my clients’ stores, step by step, with the classic traps and a realistic budget.

Before opening Shopify: frame the project

Most stores that don’t sell failed at this stage, not at the technical one. Before paying for any subscription, write three things down:

  • Who you sell to. A simple persona is enough: who buys, for which problem, with what budget.
  • Your launch offer. No need to put 200 products online on day one. A tight, well-presented range converts better than a messy catalogue.
  • Your difference. Price, craftsmanship, advice, speed: what a visitor must remember within 5 seconds of landing on your homepage.

This framing feeds everything else: the site structure, the copy, the photos, even the choice of theme.

Choose the right Shopify plan

For a small business starting out, the Basic plan is enough in the vast majority of cases : roughly €25 to €40 per month depending on whether you pay yearly or monthly. The higher plans (Shopify, Advanced) only make sense with real volume or advanced reporting needs.

Two costs come on top of the subscription: transaction fees (around 1.5 to 2% plus a few cents per order with Shopify Payments in Europe) and paid apps, covered further down. For detailed budgets, see How much does a Shopify agency cost?

Choose and customise a theme

The free Dawn theme is a sound, fast starting point. A premium theme (€150 to €400, one-off purchase) is worth it when you need specific sections: product-universe showcases, rich product pages, brand storytelling.

The classic trap: spending three weeks fiddling with colours while neglecting what actually converts :

  • a clear value proposition above the fold,
  • clean, consistent product photos,
  • navigation that mirrors how your customers search (by need, not by your internal references),
  • the mobile version, which often accounts for 70% of traffic.

Build product pages that convert

This is the most important page of the store. A good product page contains, in order: a clear title, photos from several angles, visible price and availability, benefits before specifications, trust signals (shipping, returns, secure payment), then the technical details for those who want to dig.

Then add related products and bundles: the simplest lever to grow average order value without growing traffic.

The administrative trio to settle before launch:

  1. Payments : enable Shopify Payments (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay) plus PayPal. Two well-integrated payment methods beat six badly configured ones.
  2. Shipping : simple, readable rules: one flat rate, a clear free-shipping threshold. Vague shipping costs are one of the top causes of cart abandonment.
  3. Legal : terms of sale, return policy, legal notices, a GDPR-compliant cookie banner. Shopify provides templates; adapt them to your business.

Lay the SEO foundations from day one

Don’t wait until you’re live to think about search: the structure is decided now. Unique title tags and meta descriptions, a single h1 per page, clean URLs, well-written collection texts, and a blog ready for content. The full method is detailed in Shopify SEO: the method.

Plug in automated emails

Even before your first marketing campaign, three automations must be running:

  • abandoned cart : the most profitable of all,
  • welcome email : with or without a first-order code,
  • post-purchase : follow-up, usage tips, review request.

Shopify Email is enough to start; Klaviyo becomes worthwhile once the list grows (see the best Shopify apps).

Launch, measure, correct

A store is never “finished”, it’s launched. Test the full journey in real conditions (test order, emails received, mobile), connect Google Analytics and Search Console, then watch the first two weeks: where traffic comes from, where visitors drop off, what sells. The corrections made at that point are worth gold.

A realistic budget and timeline

On your own, with time and discipline, expect a few hundred euros (subscription, theme, perhaps a few apps) and many hours of work.

With a professional, a complete build (setup, customised theme, product pages, baseline SEO, automations, training) starts at €990 excl. VAT for a single-product store and most often lands around €4,990 excl. VAT for a complete store, delivered in a few weeks. That’s the format of my Shopify store creation service: you leave with a store that runs and the keys to make it grow.
